City of Wetaskiwin

Planning for prosperity

The City of Wetaskiwin is home to approximately 11,700 people and is surrounded by some of the finest farmland in Alberta, Canada, nestled in the heart of the province’s parkland. It has the amenities of a big city with small town values and lifestyle. Situated just 30 minutes south of Edmonton, it is located just off Alberta’s major north/south corridor. It also enjoys direct highway connections extending to the east and west. Proximity to the Edmonton International Airport benefits citizens and businesses alike.

Like all communities, the city wishes to grow, further diversify further, and remain competitive as a place to live, do business and prosper. Business and community leaders felt that new visionary and proactive leadership was needed.

Integral Strategy™ was used to facilitate a dialogue with citizens, the business community, and the City to create an economic and community development strategy that clarified the City’s strategic intentions and identified required supporting actions. Citizens were engaged through an online survey and town hall meetings, and a steering group was formed of business leaders.

The resulting Strategy Roadmap — called the ‘Roadmap to Prosperity’ — has been used to define priorities, coordinate implementation and track the City’s progress. The community has committed to working together to implement the roadmap, and new investments have been made based on the strategy. Growth and development of the community is evident.
