Big collaboration: big impact

The Alzheimer Society of Calgary is a registered charity with a mission “To enable local people impacted by dementia to live life well and build the capacity of the community to support and care for them.” They are a knowledgeable and credible voice for people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and their care partners. The work of the Society is to ensure that people with dementia, their families and care partners have access to high quality education, care and support across the dementia continuum in Calgary and area. This is accomplished through direct service provision and by convening stakeholders to identify, explore and address gaps.

Challenge

The Dementia Network of Calgary and Area (the Network) was formed as a collaborative, multi-stakeholder initiative comprised of knowledgeable, capable and passionate individuals from across the public, private and non-profit sectors in Calgary and Area who have an interest in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. This Network self-organized because of the recognition that more impactful achievements could be made by working together in concert. It currently includes 22 members who have come together to assist with the development and realization of an all-encompassing strategy.

Solution

Integral Strategy™ was used to facilitate a dialogue among the Dementia Network partners to develop a Strategy Roadmap. The United Way of Calgary and Area and The Calgary Foundation saw the value in this opportunity and provided the required funding.

Impacts

The final version of the Roadmap was presented to a larger stakeholder group through an Open House attended by over 50 additional organizations. A Contribution Map indicating areas of current action by all stakeholders was developed, priorities were selected and Action Teams have formed to begin implementation planning. The Alzheimer Society of Calgary has been designated by the Network partners, as the “Backbone Organization” to support and steward ongoing development and implementation.

“The Dementia Network of Calgary had the privilege to work with the Integral Strategy Network to develop our roadmap for dementia in Calgary. Richard Pauls and Don McLeod led us through an extremely efficient process and after only a few sessions we had a clearly articulated trategic goal and direction on how we will achieve it. The workshops stimulated great conversations that lead to a shared vision from a wide variety of stakeholders and helped us build a cohesive team. We have made significant progress in addressing issues related to dementia and that is in large part due to the great foundation we have in our Strategy roadmap”
